The Ira Moore Barton Papers consist almost entirely of records of his legal practice during the period of his partnership with Peter C. Bacon. Leading correspondents include Bacon, George Bliss, Henry Chapin, Thomas Kinnicutt, Levi Lincoln, Pliny Merrick, Rejoice Newton, Bradford Sumner, Emory Washburn, and Samuel Bayard Woodward. There is also a folder of Civil War letters, a letterbook for his legal partnership for the period 1845-1847, legal ledgers and dockets, and three volumes of ledgers reflecting the legal career of William Sumner Barton, 1847-1854. Among this collection is also a series of notes taken by Ira Moore Barton as chairman of a committee appointed by the General Court to inquire into the causes of complaints of the Mashpee Indians. This 136-page bound collection of minutes of the committee's meetings extends from 5 February to 8 March 1834. Benjamin Franklin Hallet (1797-1862) appears to have played a prominent role in the deliberations of the committee.

Rejoice Newton was a prominent Worcester attorney and Massachusetts state legislator. He was born of father Isaac Newton on 11 Oct. 1782 in Greenfield, Mass., and died on 4 Feb. 1868 in Worcester. Peter Child Bacon (1804-1886) was born in Dudley, Mass., the son of Jepthah and Joanna Child Bacon.
